451 Research - Biography

Martin McCarthy
Chief Executive Officer

Martin has served as CEO of The 451 Group since June 2001. In October 2001, he led the management team in a buyout of the firm from its UK-based financial backers. Martin sold his last operating company, IDD Enterprises LP, to Dow Jones & Company Inc in 1998. Since that time, through Bone Hollow Ventures he has assisted emerging technology, media and interactive services companies around the world, combining angel investing and strategic counsel for CEOs and directorial boards. Clients have included Twister Research in the Netherlands, Tradewind Communications in Australia and HCI in South Africa.

Martin led IDD as President since 1990, and took it through several phases of growth and diversification. Under his leadership, IDD conceived, built and operated Barron's Online, large portions of The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition and several generations of Smith Barney Access, the brokerage firm's retail website, as well as other leading sites. Previously Martin drove the first wave of financial information redistribution to the nascent personal investor marketplace, through relationships with early online distributors including CompuServe, Prodigy, Dow Jones New/Retrieval, Dialog and Lexis/Nexis. Martin led a management group in the 1991 buyout of IDD's predecessor firm from its parent, United Newspapers Plc, the London-based media company now known as United Media.

Prior to that, Martin served as Vice President of Office Message and Information Services for Western Union Corp. In this capacity, he had P&L responsibility for the company's $400m+ division that included global telex and Easylink electronic mail. Under Martin's direct leadership, Western Union Easylink grew to become the world's largest commercial email system and pioneered fax-based messaging, bulletin board services and early EDI offerings. He also created the award-winning online gateway service known as InfoMaster, which permitted natural language access to aggregated, previously subscription-based data services. Martin joined Western Union in 1983 as Director of Corporate Planning.

McCarthy began his career with the Center for Strategy Research, a research and consulting firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts specializing in market research and strategy consulting for the financial services and energy/environmental services industries.

McCarthy received his BA, cum laude, from Maharishi International University and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
