Research Associate I - (Boston Based)

Title:             Research Associate I (Analyst in Training)
Report to:     Director, Associate Development

451 Research, a technology-industry analyst firm, seeks self-motivated individuals with strong writing and interpersonal skills to join its Associates program.  This program is designed to develop strong candidates into Technology Industry Analysts within 3-5 years. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious individual who wishes to build a career in the technology sector while working in a rapidly growing entrepreneurial company. 451 Research provides a strong benefits plan and offers a stimulating, fast-paced work environment.

The single most important requirement for this position is curiosity about the industry and the ability to look beyond what is happening to understand why it is happening, and how it affects specific players in the market. Beyond that, the candidate must have excellent Web research skills as well as problem-solving skills. The applicant must be highly organized and self-directed. The ideal candidate would have some understanding about the enterprise information technology marketplace; however, this is not a requirement.

451 Research prides itself on the quality of the writing that goes into its research reports. As such, not only does the analysis need to be objective, but we expect clarity, logic, brevity and craftsmanship. Two writing tests will be part of the selection process.

The associate will be responsible for meeting deadlines for projects, most of which will involve secondary research. Projects will be assigned from across the sectors that 451 Research covers. The following is an illustrative list of responsibilities:

•    Building the competitor list for research reports
•    Researching markets we cover and proposed new markets considered for coverage
•    Researching companies with whom we are about to have briefings
•    Note-taking for vendor briefing calls
•    Generating lists of companies in particular segments
•    Completing comparison tables
•    Drafting brief company descriptions based on a defined template
•    Scheduling analyst interviews
•    Setting up analyst meetings
•    Authoring specific sections of reports and actively participating in vendor briefings, as the associate develops their skills

All of these activities will be done under the supervision of a Senior Analyst or more senior member of the research team. In addition, all Associates will be assigned Analyst Mentors and will report centrally to a local manager in the Boston office.
Associates will be required to work at 451 Research's Boston office. Telecommuting will not be an option for Associates.

Account Executive - Information Technology (Boston Based)

The position could be based in New York or Boston and offers a competitive total compensation package and room for growth within the organization.

Knowledge of the technology industry or syndicated research is a preferred, but not an absolute requirement.

HR Generalist (Boston Based)

Title:                Human Resources Generalist

Position Summary:
HR Generalist works closely with the VP of HR in supporting our Boston office by implementing human resources programs and solving performance problems. This position carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: training and development, employee relations, recruiting and onboarding, coaching managers, handling workers compensation claims, performance management, policy implementation, affirmative action and employment law compliance.


Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Administers various human resource plans and procedures for all company personnel.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures.
  • Consults with line management, provides HR policy guidance and interpretation and provides HR guidance when appropriate.

Education/Work Experience:
  • 4+ years of experience as HR Generalist, Training and Development focused highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of multiple HR disciplines, including recruiting, employee relations, compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, performance management, and respective federal and state employment law.
  • A bachelor’s degree and three to five years’ human resource experience, or a master’s degree in human resource management and two years’ experience in the HR field, or seven years of experience in the HR field, or any similar combination of education and experience.
  • PHR Certification is preferred but not required.

Membership Recruitment and Services Coordinator (Boston Based)

The selected candidate will work with our Membership & Recruitment team to build, grow, manage and nurture our 451 survey research networks.

451 Research conducts large sample surveys of its networks of enterprise technology and IT management professionals. These individuals have a broad range of expertise – including datacenter technologies, cloud computing, information security, storage and other digital infrastructure technology areas. Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will be an evangelical salesperson who can initiate, develop and build lasting relationships with prospects and customers alike.  You will be intelligent and articulate, have experience landing and growing new and existing account revenue, and have experience selling directly to mid-large complex organisations.  An Interest in and knowledge of the ICT industry is required, experience working in the syndicated research or consultancy services industry is a plus.

System Administrator - LAMP Environment (Boston/NYC Based)

Title:             System Administrator -LAMP Stack/Environment

The 451 Group is seeking an experienced System Administrator who is very proficient with LAMP environments. This position is part of a new team that will be responsible for the ad-ministration of our production and development web server and database environments, as well as administration of our multiple offices internal network infrastructure.

As a System Administrator, you will take part in projects such as building new server environments, troubleshooting & fixing issues as they arise in our production & customer facing environments, interfacing directly with developers to fulfill any systems requests or needs that they may have, as well as the routine maintenance, updates, and upgrades of our server infrastructure and offices internal network infrastructure.

An ideal candidate would be a good self-starter that enjoys tinkering with and exploring new technologies. This position would require 3 days per week in the Boston or NYC office. You will be responsible for some after hours and weekend work while on-call, which may include responding to urgent systems issues.

Required Skills and Experience:

•    3-5 years’ experience of system administration in corporate LAMP environments. Ubuntu or Debian experience highly preferred.
•    At least one industry certification (Net+, Linux+, etc.).
•    Very strong knowledge of Apache configuration, MySQL and PostgreSQL administration tasks (backups, restores, permissions, etc.), IPTables, nginx, and shell scripting.
•    Security minded - knowledge of the current threat landscape, experience with previous incidents, intrusion prevention & detection
•    Good understanding of network infrastructure, such as firewalls, switches, routers, subnets, VLANs, etc.
•    Participate in an on-call/after-hours rotation.
•    Periodically travel to other offices to participate in IT projects.

Preferred but not required skills:

•    WordPress administration experience
•    Joomla administration experience
•    Atlassian and/or Docker development environment experience a huge plus.
•    SonicWall firewall administration
•    Experience working with cloud providers such as Linode and Rackspace.
•    Experience troubleshooting and optimizing WiFi networks.
