The acquirer has been expanding its software-defined storage offerings beyond its venerable SANsymphony roots, first with the introduction in November 2019 of its own vFiLO data platform for managing files and objects, and now with the purchase of pioneering object storage vendor Caringo.
The pandemic bolstered the shift toward cloud computing in 2020. Spending on acquisitions of infrastructure management vendors dropped to its lowest annual total in more than a decade. Still, there's reason to anticipate higher spending in 2021.
The year ahead will see an acceleration of digital transformation initiatives that support business outcomes of agility, resilience and cost containment. The transition to hybrid, multicloud IT infrastructures supported by cloud-native application development tools and practices will only accelerate, as we will still have to operate under pandemic conditions for a minimum of several months into 2021.
The company has unveiled a DR service that uses AWS S3 as the on-demand repository for VM replicas. Based on technology obtained via its acquisition of Datrium in July, the new managed service lowers the cost basis for DR and is expected to increase its prevalence as a key use case for VMware Cloud on AWS adoption.
Hybrid technology offers a flexible model that frees business IT from the limitations of on-premises infrastructure. But that also brings new challenges for dealing with complexity, and the management challenges of workloads and data outside the datacenter. Cohesity and AWS believe their DMaaS offering can be the right tool to mitigate much of that complexity.
The company has focused on granular and content-aware data management for years, but there is an increasing need for greater data identification and management capabilities as data growth spirals upward.
