Following on an exceptionally strong open to 2015, M&A activity not only held the momentum in the just-completed second quarter, it accelerated dramatically. Spending on TMT deals in Q2 hit nearly $200bn, roughly one-third more than we've seen in any three-month period since 2000. In fact, the value of transactions announced in the past three months alone actually eclipsed some recent full-year totals.

PayPal agrees to pay $1.1bn in cash for Xoom, an online money-transfer company with a large international and mobile presence. Xoom allows people to move money internationally, often done through mobile devices, while taking a service fee for each transaction. The deal allows PayPal stronger entry into the money-transfer market on the eve of its split with parent company eBay.

Best known for making multibillion-dollar deals for companies such as Global Crossing and tw telecom, Level 3 has gone small and strategic with its acquisition of Black Lotus, a provider of distributed denial-of-service attack protection services. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but 451 Research estimates that Level 3 paid $30-50m for Black Lotus.
