Update from Agatha Poon, Research Director for Asia-Pacific Services:

The new era of IT – From India and China to Southeast Asia

July 13, 2017

While geopolitical events such as US immigration policy continue to cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future of the Indian IT industry, with Nasscom taking more conservative estimates of IT export growth for FY 2018- growing at a rate of 7-8% (which is about on par with last year’s growth levels), Indian business leaders’ enthusiasm unabated by the growing domestic market, increased investments in digital technologies, government support for technology innovation, among other factors. With all things being equal, we do see a unique quality that is taking shape among Indian IT practitioners when it comes to terms with industry-wide transformation – a fundamental change in business culture. Ravi Venkatesan, co-chairman of Infosys, has recently shared his perspective on IT evolution using the Kodak analogy. Venkatesan pointed out that the fall of Kodak’s moment was culture-driven, reiterating “culture trumps strategy”, and urged IT companies to take real action with “courageous and entrepreneurial” spirit that shaped the country’s IT industry in the first place.

Enveloped in a strong sense of entrepreneurship, Indian IT leaders are clearly the driving force for innovation and creativity. Nevertheless, their counterparts in the Asia-Pacific region are not far behind. Besides China, which has already become the fertile ground for unicorns such as Xiaomi, Didi Chuxing, and Lufax, developing economies such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam gather pace in terms of building innovative startup ecosystems. From Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City, tech startups are flourishing. Anecdotal conversations with local players suggested that sectors like fintech and e-commerce are the center of gravity in boosting global investment opportunities.

The acquisition of Bangkok-based Lazada by Alibaba and the JV between Tencent and Ookbee are good signs of vibrant tech startups in a number of Southeast Asian markets. Meanwhile, local governments have a role to play in building innovation-driven economies. Innovation Partnership Program (IPP) in Vietnam, which is jointly financed by Governments of Vietnam and Finland to provide support for the country’s still fledging startup ecosystem, is just one example. MDEC in Malaysia has recently unveiled new initiatives to support tech startups. The Ministry of Science and Technology in Thailand has high hopes for the “Startup Thailand 2017” event in its quest to raise awareness of the indigenous startup community. We expect to see a growing number of government-led projects in developing Asia, which in turn help ignite a new wave of entrepreneurship in the name of digital transformation.
