451 Research APAC Insight

Update from Agatha Poon, Research Director for Asia-Pacific Services and Teddy Miller, Associate Analyst:

The Rise of India’s Datacenter Market, Driven by Cloud

October 23, 2017

Digital transformation, hybrid IT, cloud-native and more. Regardless of the industry buzzword, CIOs are well aware of the impact that “new age” technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), IoT, data analytics have had on their organizations. As the new style of IT emerges, companies are urged to rewrite the rules for datacenter capacity. The MTDC team at 451 Research has already witnessed a sea change in the industry, with active players charting their game plans, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

We have closely tracked APAC most established markets (Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney) and monitored trends in largest emerging datacenter destinations (China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia). We are now getting our boots on the ground in these countries and publishing reports highlighting top-tier markets and even second-tier cities to look out for in the future. Since the beginning of 2016, the MTDC team has expanded the breadth of its annual series of long-form Technology and Business Insights (TBI) to include Beijing, Guangzhou, Melbourne, Seoul, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Taipei. Most recently, we published our first ever TBI on the state of the colocation market in India, focusing on the top three cities: Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore.

Key members of the MTDC team traveled to Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bangalore, speaking with providers and touring datacenter facilities. Not surprisingly, each city has its own unique set of opportunities and challenges, and the changes in enterprise-wide transformation are just beginning. Datacenter developers in Mumbai, India’s commercial and financial center, for instance, hope to appeal to foreign-based multinational corporations, while providers with extensive operations in New Delhi, the country’s capital, are more concentrated on e-commerce-related government initiatives, among other things. Bangalore’s unique role as the IT services hub of India has spurred consistent growth in the city as well. The rise of IT infrastructure outsourcing (which has already given colocation a new lease on life) and growing demand for public cloud are the common thread of conversations in each of these markets.

According to 451 Research’s Market Monitor, the cloud-computing-as-a-service (CCaaS) market in India is expected to maintain a 25% CAGR from 2016 to 2021. Global hyperscalers and IT services providers are increasingly seeking to exploit the country’s growing private sector, which in turn accelerates demand for colocation capacity. Indeed, datacenter operators large and small in India are readying themselves for scaling operations to accommodate this newfound demand.

None of this is to say that the development of India’s datacenter industry hasn’t been fraught with difficulty. Like anywhere else, the market comes with its own distinct challenges and idiosyncrasies, arising primarily from uneven economic development. Systemic inequality, inferior infrastructure, relatively low internet penetration and lethargic bureaucracy are only a few of the problems that colocation providers in India are dealing with on a daily basis. Nevertheless, what makes India such an exciting datacenter market to cover, is not necessarily its current make-up, but rather its vast potential going forward.
