Public Cloud Annual Summary: New Price Battlegrounds, but the War Rages on Value

Findings from the Public Cloud Price Index show that costs continued downward in the past year, though at varying rates in different regions. While virtual machines have been the traditional battlefront in the so-called 'price wars' among hyperscalers, the steepest drop was in object storage, and we've also seen considerable activity in SQL pricing - a service aimed at the heart of many enterprise workloads. Cost remains an important factor in cloud adoption, but customers are willing to pay more for perceived value - whether in terms of service portfolio, reputation, level of support, geographic reach or locality - and more expensive cloud providers appear to be taking away market share from cheaper ones.
