Storage as a Service6 Aug, 2010 ~
Cloud storage is a new way of delivering storage capacity to individuals and businesses. Although definitions are somewhat amorphous at present, cloud storage services generally have two defining characteristics: 1) capacity is offered and billed for on an on-demand basis, and 2) storage is provided by and often located at a third-party service provider.
StaaS is the provisioning of storage resources via a metered service. The StaaS segment includes stand-alone cloud storage, storage services as part of a larger cloud initiative (i.e., PaaS-attached storage), and online backup and disaster recovery. A brief overview of each cloud storage component is provided here. This report examines 47 vendors in the StaaS marketplace and provides our assessment of key market value propositions and trends, growth accelerators and inhibitors, aggregate market size and growth rates, and the market share of leading vendors.
