Dan Harrington was a Research Director covering the Internet of Things (IoT) and Datacenter Transformation at 451 Research. His primary focus was directing the Voice of the Enterprise studies covering those two topics, which surveys over a thousand enterprises quarterly regarding their adoption of technologies, investment, business drivers, capacity planning, workload demand and the shift from on-premises to colocation, hosting and cloud services. Dan also brought his market knowledge to research in emerging areas of enterprise IT such as converged systems, enterprise software, microprocessor trends and appliances.
Dan joined 451 Research from Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise division, where he held several roles covering strategy, business planning and product marketing for Microsoft's converged systems and reference architectures. Prior to Microsoft, Dan worked at IDC as a Senior Analyst covering the enterprise server market, and before that spent time contracting as an IT capacity manager at Pfizer.
While still not declining in most cases, datacenter and facilities spending is relatively flat (about +2%) quarter over quarter, with IT infrastructure spending (server, storage and networking) growing faster (about +4%) but at a decelerated pace from the same time last year. Usage of cloud and colocation resources in place of on-site infrastructure continues.
This quarter's Voice of the Enterprise: Datacenter Transformation study focuses on how organizational dynamics, including size, technical team layout and industry is affecting datacenter and IT investment priorities. These topics are explored through surveys of 1,000 IT decision-makers across various disciplines. These latest findings profile enterprise, SMB and public-sector companies to determine how they are investing in IT and datacenters as well as cloud services. It will also explore what projects organizations are executing, and usage of DevOps versus siloed or generalist technical teams. Our findings show that enterprise organizations have very different priorities than smaller organizations and the public sector as they grapple with their preexisting infrastructure footprint and legacy applications.
