John McNeice covers cloud infrastructure providers, cloud-native application protection platforms, managed security services, and managed detection and response providers. He has been part of the S&P Global Market Intelligence Information Security Channel since 2022 and has a decade of experience working for MSS, MDR and cloud service providers. John started his information security career with SilverSky, an MSS provider that focuses on serving financial institutions and cloud service provider partners. He was a major part of SilverSky’s successful acquisition by BAE Systems, the largest defense contractor in Europe. As a product manager with BAE, John was responsible for MSS and cloud security strategy and partnerships and helped support BAE’s Enterprise Security Analytics product launch in the US in 2015. John continued his product management career at Symantec, where he was responsible for cloud strategy for Symantec’s MSS business unit (later acquired by Accenture). He also worked as a product manager at Rackspace, a multicloud service provider, and Navisite, Charter Communications’ cloud business unit. In all of these roles, John worked closely with security operations center teams, software development teams and cloud infrastructure teams. He has worked closely with all of the major cloud providers and most of the major security vendors as strategic partners. John started his professional career as a research analyst covering technology stocks for a boutique investment research firm in Boston. He holds an MBA from Boston College, where he studied global management with a focus on technology product management, and a BA in economics from Williams College.
The security startup, which recently raised $14.2 million in financing, is seeking to modernize cloud-native runtime security. It targets cloud-native enterprises with advanced cloud security needs, such as threat detection and response, as well as extended Berkeley Packet Filtering monitoring.
The company is expanding Prisma Cloud into the adjacent application security and data security markets. Palo Alto Networks seeks to capitalize on the vendor consolidation trend and align with customer budgets, which are growing substantially for both application security and data security.
The move is consistent with a trend among extended detection and response providers that have been successful in selling CNAPP as a module for their platforms, and aims to take advantage of the vendor consolidation trend. CNAPP market growth remains strong as we enter 2024, as does the potential for further CNAPP acquisitions.
The managed detection and response market is growing rapidly as enterprises struggle with challenges such as the need for 24/7 monitoring and the cybersecurity skills gap. MDR provider DeepSeas has purchased GreyCastle Security to build out its portfolio of complementary cybersecurity risk and compliance services.
The cloud-native open-source community is addressing new IT challenges with characteristic ingenuity, but is facing economic headwinds. With Kubernetes and containers now embedded in enterprise IT environments, the focus is shifting to services that can leverage the standard to empower developers and drive innovation while controlling costs.
